Did Jesus Really Need to Die?

Tuesday, September 26th, 2017

As Christians, we have a short answer to a question that has been asked many times over many centuries.  Why did Jesus have to die?  Jesus died to forgive our sin.  But such a reply doesn’t always answer all the questions and concern we have about why a Father God would go and send his only Son to die such a wretched death on a cross?  Could not God have found a more humane way?

The Ethics of a Christian Life

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017
In Dr. Richard Hays’ book, Moral Vision of the New Testament, he talks about the ethics found in the New Testament writings.  In the writings of John we find the ethic of solidarity where both Gentiles and Jews find their unity in Christ and one another.  In the writings of Luke we find the ethic of hospitality that shines forth from Jesus and the body of Christ that welcomes all people.

Love is a Two Sided Sword

Tuesday, September 12th,  2017

Modern day culture defines love as unyielding acceptance, and there is some truth to this idea.  A 20th century theologian named Paul Tillich once defined grace with this sentence:  “You are accepted, accepted, accepted, and to this sentence there is no period.”  But biblical love is always a two sided sword where both forgiveness and accountability are held in tension with each other.

The Witness of Character

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

John Wooden once said, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

When people ask tough questions…

Tuesday, August 29, 2017

When it comes to the work of going out to make disciples for Jesus Christ, the rubber often hits the road when people start to ask tough questions like … why do bad things happen to good people?

How do we make disciples for Jesus Christ?

Tuesday, August 22, 2017

How do we make disciples for Jesus Christ?  The key is in learning how to invite … and that means to invite others to follow Jesus, and not us.  We may think that if we give people the right understanding, or the right experience, they will find their way.
