Living Faithfully: Human Sexuality and the United Methodist Church

Sundays in February 5-6pm

Senior Pastor Dennis Flaugher will be teaching a 4-week course from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, February 3, 10, 17, 24. The class will be held in the Open Fellowship Classroom and will focus on the upcoming called special session of the General Conference in St. Louis to be held February 23 – 26 of this year.

The purpose of this class is not to champion either conservative or progressive stands on this issue, but to help us understand why there is this disagreement in the United Methodist Church, and what United Methodists are seeking to address in this upcoming special session of the General Conference.

Whether we like it or not, the United Methodist Church is a very diverse denomination of over 7,000,000 members in the U.S.A. alone, and there is deep disagreement about what the United Methodist Church should teach about homosexuality, same-gender marriage, and the ordination of LGBTQ persons.

This 4-week course, Living Faithfully, is designed to help you understand the shape of this debate and what it means for the present and the future. Each lesson will explore background on the Bible, Christian theology, history, stories from diverse viewpoints, as well as descriptions of the United Methodist structure on how to address it all.

The goal of this 4-week study is to help you have well-informed, honest, and grace filled conversations with others about these matters. My hope is that we who participate in this study will learn how we can discern, in prayer and conversation, respond faithfully in love of God and love of neighbor. Do come and join us for this 4-week adventure.
